Helping women this Christmas
In the run up to Christmas, I often think about women who are struggling. Christmas is a polarising time of year. For some, it’s a season of excess: of love, food, booze, people and presents.
For others, it’s the time they miss loved ones the most, or a time when they try to give their children a magical Christmas with very low resources. I wish I could invite all of those women and their families round to my house, and give everyone a full belly, a laugh, and a little emotional support.
As this isn’t possible, I try to help in small ways.
My favourite women’s charity
The UK women’s charity closest to my heart is Smart Works. This amazing charity offers interview clothing and coaching to unemployed women with upcoming job interviews. Already with locations in London, Edinburgh, Reading, Greater Manchester, Birmingham and Newcastle; Smart Works plan to reach women in even more cities in the near future.
Why am I so passionate about Smart Works?
I was a dressing volunteer for this women’s charity before I had my son. I had the privilege of being able to help women to feel confident in the way they looked before their job interviews. Women who came to the charity expecting to be treated like a number, were pampered and shown humanity and compassion. The transformation from guarded and insecure to smiling at yourself in the mirror is wonderful to witness.
If you ever need help believing in the transformative power of clothing, watch the Smart Works video.
What does this have to do with shoes?
Have you ever worn a painful pair of shoes to a job interview? What about court shoes which were a bit big, and kept slipping at the back? It’s essential that the women who Smart Works help, are able to feel confident in their entire outfits.
Do you have smart shoes in your wardrobe that you don’t wear? They don’t have to be a dark colour or a neutral. Some of the most confidence-boosting interview outfits have a colour pop. Smart Works clients love high quality shoes to wear and would be delighted with a pair of yours.
Do you own or manage a shoe brand? Good quality samples (no drilled holes) are also welcome. Consider making Smart Works your charity partner.
Please pack up a parcel or drop off your smart high quality shoes, handbags, or clothing to your nearest Smart Works. Just imagine a woman confidently striding into her job interview in your shoes.
If you don’t have any spare shoes to give, there are many other ways to help Smart Works’ fabulous female clients.
From giving money, to organising a clothing drive, or attending a Smart Works sale, you can contribute to a massive change in a woman’s life.
One thing you can do for free is to talk to your friends about Smart Works. Maybe someone in your family would love to declutter, and send their shoes to women who need them to gain employment.
